“Golem Challah” baked and braided by Olivia Devorah Tucker
A golem is most traditionally a clay creature, animated through magical Jewish shaping and incantations. Here I have made a torso, arms, and legs, made of braided bread. Instead of a head, we have the letters alef-mem-tav, EMET “truth,” often written on a Golem’s forehead to bring it to life. To de-animate a golem, the alef is removed, leaving only MET “death.” What part of the body would you eat first?
